On Sketchbooks -
I got into a conversation with someone on Twitter about Sketchbooks and how to work in them.
Personally I’ve got a long and fraught history with Sketchbooks and like many difficult relationships in my life, it took years to finally get to a place where the…
I think different sketchbook formats tend to develop your art in different ways. When I was hanging out drawing with seriously skilled writers I watched how some numbered all their pages before starting to draw, they did it to stop themselves from tearing pages out. They also insisted every page be completed and inked before moving on to the next. You never saw these guys put up a wak piece. They trained and trained to ensure everything they started got finished well. You can’t rip a page off the wall.
When I was drawing with art school and advertising creatives I saw a completely different approach. Scribbles and doodles, completely random shit, I wonder what will happen if I try this pages, stick men and other types of visual shorthand that only serve to get an idea down as quick as possible. These were the charts of explorers, never intended to be viewed as works in their own right.
I’ve filled at least 15 A3 sketchbooks so far, some just with notes and the odd clipping. You gotta study to understand. But how you choose to fill that book does guide your learning. Consider what aspect of your art you want to develop before you get to filling pages, you might find a format that helps you in the right direction.
